Morsi ignored ElBaradei's demands

Egypt opposition leader wants national dialogue

CAIRO (AP) Egypt's liberal opposition leader on Wednesday called for a broad national dialogue with the Islamist government, all political factions and the powerful military, aimed at stopping the country's eruption of political violence that has left 60 dead the past week.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei's appeal appeared to be aimed at responding to a sharp warning by the head of the armed forces a day earlier that Egypt could collapse unless the country's feuding political factions reconcile.

But so far the opposition National Salvation Front headed by ElBaradei and the government of President Mohammed Morsi have been at loggerheads, with the front demanding Morsi make major concessions as a condition for any dialogue. Morsi has ignored their demands, holding his own "national dialogue" program, mainly with his own Islamist allies, nike free sko.

Meanwhile, violence has spiraled after first erupting in Cairo on eve of last Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that toppled authoritarian president Hosni Mubarak. It since spread around the country, with the worst violence in the Suez Canal city of Port Said, which has virtually declared itself in revolt against Morsi's government.

In response, Morsi declared a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew in Port Said and two other Canal cities, billige nike free, Suez and Ismailiya, and their surrounding provinces. But every night since it went into effect, tens of thousands of residents in the city have defied the curfew with nighttime rallies and marches, chanting against Morsi and the Musllim Brotherhood, which forms the backbone of his rule.

In a Tweet, ElBaradei called for an immediate meeting between Morsi, the defense and interior ministers, the Brotherhood's political party, the National Salvation Front and parties of the ultraconservative Salafi movement "to take urgent steps to stop the violence and start a serious dialogue."

He said stopping the violence is the priority, but stuck by the front's previous conditions for holding a dialogue that Morsi form a national unity government and form a commission to amend contentious articles of the Islamist-backed constitution.

There was no immediate response from the presidency or the Muslim Brotherhood on ElBaradei's new call. Morsi was on a brief visit to Germany and was expected back in Egypt later Wednesdsay.

Over the past week, Morsi ignored ElBaradei's demands, and the Brotherhood said they don't accept conditions for talks, nike sko free.

The Front has depicted the unrest as a backlash against Islamists' insistence on monopolizing power and as evidence that the Brotherhood and its allies are unable to manage the country on their own.

Morsi has been holding his own national dialogue program for more than a month, touting it as a chance for non-Islamists to make their voice heard in decision-making. But almost all opposition groups have shunned it as mere window dressing.

Officials in the presidency and the Brotherhood have blamed the opposition for instigating the violence, accusing them of trying to bring down Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president.

Late Tuesday, Morsi authorized governors of the three provinces to either cancel or limit curfew hours in an attempt to assuage public anger. Suez Governor Gen. Samer Aglan said that he will ease up the curfew while deploying more troops to the streets after midnight.

WASHINGTON (AP) House Speaker John Boehner says he "absolutely" trusts President Barack Obama not that they don't have their differences.

Boehner tells ABC's "This Week" that the two have a good relationship and that they're "open with each other ... honest with each other." But the Ohio lawmaker says they're trying to bridge some big differences.

One issue they agree on: The U.S,cheap nike blazers. doesn't have an immediate crisis in terms of debt.

Some conservatives criticized Obama when he said last week that the country doesn't have an immediate debt crisis.

Boehner says a debt crisis does loom in the years ahead because entitlement programs are not sustainable if they aren't changed.

He says balancing the budget will help the economy.

Arrested "rogue financier" led colorful life

BERLIN (Reuters) - The Uffizi Gallery in Florence provided a fittingly lavish backdrop for the arrest on fraud charges of Florian Homm, a flamboyant German financier who has spent more than five years in hiding.

U.S. authorities accuse the former hedge fund manager of orchestrating a market manipulation scheme to artificially improve the performance of his funds, a fraud that led to at least $200 million in losses to investors.

Homm, now 53, disappeared in 2007 from his luxury villa on the Mediterranean island of Majorca after, according to U.S. authorities, dumping tens of millions of dollars' worth of his own shares in his company Absolute Capital Management Holdings Ltd and causing huge losses to investors.

The story of his arrest by Italian police on Friday, like so much else in Homm's life, reads like a thriller. Acting on a tipoff from the FBI, the police followed his ex-wife and son to their rendezvous with the elusive Homm at the Uffizi.

There, as the three were admiring classical Greek sculptures, police said they arrested him "very discreetly".

"Even the museum guards didn't notice anything," said the director of the Uffizi, cheap nike blazers, Antonio Natali.

Everything about the cigar-chomping Homm, who stands over two meters (6 feet 7 inches) tall and is nicknamed the "steamroller", seems larger than life.

In his native Germany, Homm is viewed by some as a symbol of the hubristic greed that helped trigger the global financial crisis of 2008-09,nike blazers high.

But he is also remembered for saving one of the country's most revered soccer teams, Borussia Dortmund, from bankruptcy and has more recently established a charity, Maximum Impact Medicine, that aims to save lives by providing cheap vaccines.

"Homm was definitely what you would call a colorful figure," said Klaus Nieding, a lawyer and head of the German shareholders' association DSW which has had dealings with Homm.

"Back in 2005-2007, he clearly fancied himself in the role of a tycoon who carried out a whole range of diverse investments. But, to put it mildly, there are numerous investors who feel their interests haven't been served in the best possible way," Nieding told Reuters.

UNDERGROUND

In a recent autobiography that bears the English title "The Rogue Financier: Adventures of an Estranged Capitalist", Homm tells of how he boarded his private plane in 2007 with cash stuffed into his underwear and cigar case and fled to Colombia.

In German his book is entitled "Kopf Geld Jagd" (Headhunt for Money), a reference to a $1.5 million reward offered by a German private detective last year for information on his whereabouts. Homm said he saw this as an effective contract on his life.

"I had a long list of enemies," he said.

Homm, who went to the United States as a young man to play basketball and ended up graduating from Harvard Business School, said he wanted to make amends for his past misdeeds by devoting himself to good causes.

"I used to be filthy rich, I had everything such a person has - villas, planes, a private zoo, yachts, everything. But I didn't know what to do with it," he said in a rare interview published last November in the now-defunct Financial Times Deutschland newspaper.

His book, dedicated to the two children he said he regretted having neglected as a father, was intended to discourage young people from giving in to "blind greed" as he had done, he said.

In the interview, Homm compared himself to Saint Paul in the Bible who sees the light and repents of his former life.

The paper described him as fit and tanned and said he was a keen skier and fly-fisherman, but added that the fugitive life - he said he had spent 18 months moving around the world and staying in cheap hotels - had left him nervous and suspicious.

The reporter who conducted the FTD interview wrote of having to follow elaborate instructions - ending in a metal detector scan - before finally interviewing him in a Paris hotel. Homm allowed no photographs or tape recordings.

The criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles alleges that Homm directed hedge funds to buy billions of shares of U.S.-based penny stocks and trade them among themselves to inflate their prices and the funds' asset values while generating additional fees for him and his company.

There has been no indication from Homm as to how he will plead.

Italy is now expected to extradite him to the United States.

Author Odeen Ishmael Pens Guyana History and its Rich Heritage

New book follows the Guyana history from the period of European colonization to its attainment of independence,Air Griffey on sale.

BOSTON, Mass. (PRWEB) March 18, 2013

By knowing about the past, people will be in a better position to understand and appreciate the present. Author Odeen Ishmael presents the progression of Guyana history and development through his valuable publication, The Guyana Story. It features the earliest times to Independence, tracing the country’s history from thousands of years ago when the first Amerindian groups began their settlement in the Guyana territory.

The book examines the period of early European exploration leading to Dutch colonization and the forcible introduction of African slaves to work on cotton and sugar plantations. It also scrutinizes the effects of European wars, and the final ceding of the territory to the British who ruled it as their colony until they finally granted it independence in 1966. It includes the Indian, Chinese, and Portuguese indentured immigration, nike blazers high, showing how the cultural interrelationships among the various ethnic groups introduced newer forms of conflict but at the same time, brought about cooperation in the struggles of the workers for better working and living conditions.

The final part describes the roles of the political leaders who arose from among these ethnic groups from the late 1940s and began the political struggle against colonialism and the demand for independence. This struggle led to political turbulence in the 1950s and early 1960s when the country was caught in the crosshairs of the cold war resulting in joint British-American devious actions that undermined a democratically elected pro-socialist government and deliberately delayed independence for the country until a government friendly to their international interests came to power.

Educational and highly enlightening, The Guyana Story is a collection of short essays attempting to relate the story of the Guyanese people in a generally chronological order. These will give the readers a wonderful insight into the rich heritage of the country, and will continue to encourage others to conduct and document further research into various aspects of Guyanese history.

As Groupon Preps IPO, Google And Startups Grab Mer

As Groupon Preps IPO, Google And Startups Grab Merchants

This story appears in the Nov. 21, 2011 edition of Forbes magazine.

Steve Chen owns 5A5, one of San Francisco’s better steak houses. He’s been contacted by 100 daily-deal companies over the past year to sell happy hour and porterhouse discounts. He thought about going with the leader of the pack, Groupon, but went with a startup called Bloomspot. It provides some things Groupon does not. Bloomspot guarantees a certain check size and gives Chen the ability to target more frequent diners and limit the deal to just Sunday through Thursday nights.

Jonathan Umbel suffered the Groupon experience Chen was trying to avoid. Umbel is the owner of the Tackle Box, a seafood restaurant in Georgetown that bills itself as Washington, D.C.’s “first and only lobster shack.” He lured thousands of customers by offering bargain-priced lobster rolls and fresh oysters on both Groupon and LivingSocial, the other big local-deals player (now backed by Amazon). That goosed his revenue but hurt his margins. He has no hard data to indicate if diners made return visits, which was the whole point, and now he thinks that the steep discounts hurt his brand, cheap Nike Trainer. Umbel isn’t planning any more deals.

Groupon went from being the fastest-growing, greatest tech startup of 2010 to a deflated bubble with merchant fatigue on the side. It will try again to go public in the coming month, but an IPO that was supposed to yield a $25 billion to $30 billion market capitalization is now likely to xyzxyz37xyzxyzyield $11 billion. That’s still big for a company that didn’t exist four years ago, but concerns about large losses, a run-in with the SEC over disclosure of non-GAAP metrics that exclude marketing costs, growing competition and worries about consumer deal fatigue have raised the question about the viability of the local-deal business model.

xyzxyz41xyzxyz

A passel of startups is looking to prove there’s a good business here, just not the way Groupon does it. San Francisco’s Bloomspot can guarantee merchants that, with a deal offering $40 for an $80 meal at a restaurant, the average check size will be at least $120. It does this by targeting customers likely to spend larger amounts. Bloomspot also guarantees a certain percentage of customers will return after using a deal, and it takes its commission, typically 40%, only if it meets these numbers. To attract loyal and high-quality customers Bloomspot gives customers a credit of 25% of their bill toward their next visit to the merchant. “Consumers only get the best deals if they demonstrate they’re good patrons,” says Jasper Malcolmson, Bloomspot’s CEO.

xyzxyz46xyzxyzWomply, a startup cofounded by former LivingSocial general manager and head of sales Brandt Squires, offers a simple proposition for consumers. They can buy deals on Womply.com with any credit or debit card; then they just pay at the merchant using the same card and get a credit sent back to their card. As with Bloomspot, no coupons or phones are required.

“My friends would be giving me sh-- for months if I pulled out a Groupon in the middle of a nice dinner,” says Womply cofounder and CEO Toby Scammell. Womply doesn’t send a mass e-mail each day to its members,xyzxyz50xyzxyznike blazers sale. It only pings customers who have shown a preference for that business. Womply also seeks out longer-term marketing deals, rather than quick ones that bring a crush of customers. “It’s much less of a get-rich-quick idea and more of a sustainable marketing plan over the long run,” says Scammell.

xyzxyz54xyzxyz

Groupon generated xyzxyz57xyzxyz$1.12 billion in the first nine months of 2011 but did so with massive spending on marketing, $613 million over the same span,xyzxyz50xyzxyznike blazers vintage. Groupon has begun trimming its marketing, but that isn’t likely to reverse what may be diminishing returns. Data from results in Boston show that the number of coupons sold per 1,000 subscribers dropped from 541 in the third quarter of 2010 to 357 in the same period this year. A recent xyzxyz61xyzxyzstudy by researchers at Harvard and Boston University found that Yelp ratings of merchants using Groupons declined soon after a deal. Tony Lucca, who owns the Washington restaurant xyzxyz63xyzxyz1905, says customers tend to redeem their deals in the first six weeks of eligibilityand then again in the last two weeks. “It’s the last two weeks that make everyone on my staff, including myself, so miserable we want to burn the restaurant down,” Lucca says.

Groupon is taking steps to address the holes in its model. It recently launched xyzxyz67xyzxyzGroupon Now, a mobile app that lets merchants near a customer’s location push out deals at specific times. Groupon also recently started a loyalty program, xyzxyz69xyzxyzGroupon Rewards, so that customers who opt in and buy more than once at a store can be tracked and get extra deals once they spend, say, $50 or $100 at a specific business.

Groupon’s bigger headache may be xyzxyz73xyzxyzGoogle, which reportedly tried to buy Groupon for $6 billion last year. Its xyzxyz75xyzxyzGoogle Offers program is live in 17 cities with plans to add 23 more soon. Google is testing putting deals in place of regular text ads on search results. It’s also building its own sales force but may turn to self-service sales for merchants looking to post deals, something Eric Rosenblum, director of product management at Google Offers, doesn’t dismiss. That strikes at the heart of Groupon’s expensive direct-sales model. “We are very willing to invest in this,” says Rosenblum. “It’s a very high-level priority.”

Apple (AAPL) has historically relied on one Eastern manufacturing giant to assemble its iPhone lineup, but the next generation of Apple handsets will reportedly see that change. According to well-connected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans todiversifyits iPhone manufacturing plans and split orders between Foxconn and Pegatron. While Foxconn has historically assembled all iPhone models, Pegatron will reportedly build 75% of the FDD-LTE version of Apple’s upcoming entry-level iPhone model and 55% of legacy iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models. Arizona woman reviled for son's murder may go

Arizona woman reviled for son's murder may go free

PHOENIX (AP) Debra Milke was once one of the most reviled mothers around, convicted of dressing her 4-year-old son in his favorite outfit and sending him off to visit a mall Santa Claus with two men who shot the boy execution-style in the Arizona desert.

Milke said she had nothing to do with Christopher's death, but a detective testified at her 1990 trial that she had confessed to him and him alone in a closed interrogation room. Prosecutors said she had her son killed to collect on a $5,000 insurance policy.

Now, Milke could walk free, leaving death row behind after a federal appeals court threw out her conviction Thursday because prosecutors had not turned over evidence of the detective's history of misconduct, including lying under oath in other cases.

The 9th U.S,nike blazers vintage. Circuit Court of Appeals panel concluded that prosecutors' failure to turn over the evidence deprived Milke's attorneys of the chance to question Phoenix Police Detective Armando Saldate Jr.'s credibility before jurors.

And because it was the only direct evidence tying her to the killing, that fact could have swayed the jury, the panel ruled.

"No civilized system of justice should have to depend on such flimsy evidence, quite possibly tainted by dishonesty or overzealousness, to decide whether to take someone's life or liberty, cheap nike blazers," according to the opinion by Chief Judge Alex Kozinski.

Barring a successful appeal of Thursday's ruling, prosecutors will have to decide if they have enough evidence to retry Milke. The ruling doesn't toss out the supposed confession. It just allows defense lawyers to have all of the detective's police files.

The ruling has raised questions about other cases in which the now-retired Saldate gave testimony.

The court noted four cases where judges threw out confessions or indictments because Saldate lied under oath and four instances where cases were tossed or confessions excluded because Saldate violated the suspect's constitutional rights.

He was also suspended for accepting sexual favors from a female motorist he stopped and then lying about the encounter, it said.

Saldate, who was elected to a county constable post after retiring in 1990 but has now left that job, could not be reached for comment Friday.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said he intends to appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court and will argue it himself if they accept the case, saying the decision was the first to raise the issue after decades of court hearings.

"This is an outrageous crime," Horne said. "Ms. Milke was convicted of arranging for the death of her own child to improve her social life, and I hope to be able to convince the U.S. Supreme court to reverse this 9th Circuit decision."

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, who will be charged with deciding whether to retry Milke if the ruling stands, said Friday that he will have to review the available evidence and Saldate's credibility himself before deciding how to proceed. He said there may be more evidence that wasn't used at the 1990 trial.

"I want to know what the hell happened, after reading the opinion," Montgomery said. "I want to be able to review the available information and understand for myself,Air Griffey on sale."

But Montgomery said changes in the way rogue officers are monitored had changed greatly since 1990. Now, officers with credibility problems are tracked in a database so that those issues are caught early and disclosed to defense lawyers when necessary.

"The basic concerns that are raised in the 9th Circuit opinion, I do not believe that is anywhere near a systemic issue today," Montgomery said. "This is an instance where I need to make sure what we do is what's right rather than what's expedient."

Phoenix police declined to comment.

Milke's appellate lawyers, Mike Kimerer and Lori Voepel, said the appeals court's decision sends a clear message to police and prosecutors who don't reveal evidence that could help people accused of crimes defend themselves.

"It's one of the most scathing opinions I've ever seen the 9th Circuit write, in terms of talking about the credibility of a police officer or a law enforcement official," Kimerer said. "It almost sets the standard in terms of what we need to expect from law enforcement."

For Milke, who has always maintained her innocence, the ruling after 23 years on death row came as a shock, Voepel said.

"I said, 'Debra, we have good news. We won,'" Voepel said, recalling a phone call Thursday. "And she said, 'you're kidding, you're kidding," and I tried to explain it to her and she said just 'give me a minute here to feel this.' She's elated, to say the least."

Milke, 48, is one of three women on death row in the state.

The two men convicted in the Milke case, Roger Scott and former Milke roommate James Styers, are also on death row. Scott confessed during a police interrogation and led detectives to the boy's body. Neither Scott nor Styers testified against Milke.

The county attorney at the time, Rick Romley, was not so happy. "If she walks, it's a travesty of justice," Romley told KPHO-TV.

Christopher Milke's father, Arizona Mark Milke, was just as adamant, saying he was convinced his ex-wife killed their son.

"Why do you think two guys would just take off and kill my kid," he asked Friday. "Now, if she walks and those two get put to death, that's why this country has gone to hell, brother."

Milke criticized the 9th Circuit for overturning the case after so many other courts upheld his ex-wife's conviction. And he wasn't shy about voicing his views of Saldate.

"There's lot of cops that did good work on this case, but this lead detective, he should never been put on the case," Milke said. "Everything he did was screwed up."

Bombardier to pay 460 million Swiss francs to Swis

Bombardier to pay 460 million Swiss francs to Swiss railways - paper

ZURICH (Reuters) - Canada's Bombardier will have to pay at least 460 million Swiss francs (324.1 million pounds) to Swiss railway group SBB for late delivery of 59 double-deck trains the SBB ordered three years ago, a Swiss newspaper reported on Sunday.

According to a source with knowledge of the matter quoted by "Der Sonntag", the world's largest train maker Bombardier would have to pay 7,Nike Trainer sale.8 million francs for each train it delivers with a delay of a year, adding up to a total of 460.2 million Swiss francs.

Spokespeople for Bombardier did not return calls seeking comment.

SBB spokesman Reto Schaerli said the company could not give any details on the contract with Bombardier.

"Der Sonntag" also quoted other unnamed sources saying the double-deck trains might be ready even later than previously announced, possibly not before 2017.

This would also push the penalties to be paid up further, the maximum contract penalty being 708 million francs, "Der Sonntag" said.

Schaerli said the SBB had no information regarding any further delay.

The SBB had ordered 59 double-deck trains for a total of 1.9 billion Swiss francs from Bombardier in May 2010, the biggest order in the company's history.

The new trains should have taken up service from December 2013,Air Griffey on sale, but the SBB said last year they would be up to two years late, partly due to adjustments of the trains to better suit handicapped travellers.

Construction problems encountered by Bombardier also caused a delay of at least 12 months, SBB said at the time, adding negotiations about the costs arising from the delay and who would have to bear them were ongoing between SBB and Bombardier, nike blazers vintage.

Al-Qaida-linked group claims deadly Syria blast

Al-Qaida-linked group claims deadly Syria blast

BEIRUT (AP) An al-Qaida-linked group fighting alongside Syrian rebels claimed responsibility Monday for a suicide car bombing that reportedly killed dozens of President Bashar Assad's loyalists last week.

In Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius pleaded for countries to honor their pledges of funding and other aid to the Syrian opposition to keep the country out of the hands of Islamist militant groups.

"If we don't give the means to the Syrian people to go achieve their freedom, there is a risk, and we all know it exists, that massacres and antagonisms amplify, and that extremism and terrorism prevail.

"Chaos is not tomorrow, it is today, and we need to end it. We need to end it in a peaceful way and that means increased and concrete support to the Syrian National Coalition."

Islamic militants have been the most organized fighters battling government troops in the 22-month-old conflict in which more than 60,000 people have been killed. Their growing prominence has fueled fears that Muslim radicals might try to hijack the revolt, and has contributed to the West's hesitance to equip the opposition with sophisticated weapons.

In Beirut, U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said the situation in Syria was getting worse that entire neighborhoods are being destroyed by the fighting.

Amos, who just returned from Syria, also reported human rights abuses.

"I listen to the women who talk about what happened to them, to their families, the sexual abuse they have faced," Amos said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"The indiscriminate shelling. The indiscriminate killing of people. This is a conflict that is happening essentially in towns and cities," she said.

Amos said she went last year to the once rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr in the central city of Homs. She said the entire neighborhood was destroyed and more than 70,000 people had left, but no one knew where they had gone.

"There was not a single building left standing," she said. "This is being repeated across Syria, women nike blazers. It's a terrible thing."

Jabhat al-Nusra, which the U.S. says has ties to al-Qaida and has declared a terrorist organization, said in a statement posted online that one of its suicide bombers detonated a car bomb last Monday at the headquarters of a pro-government militia in the central province of Hama. It said the bomber drove a truck packed with explosives to the militia's complex in the town of Salamiya and blew himself up "to give the tyrannical regime a taste" of violence it has been inflicting on the Syrian people.

Activists said at least 42 people, mostly pro-Assad militiamen, were killed in the blast. The government did not say how many people were killed, although state-run SANA news agency published photographs of what it said was a funeral procession for the blast's victims on Wednesday. In one of the photographs, a dozen men are seen standing behind 11 caskets, wrapped into a Syrian flag.

Jabhat al-Nusra has previously targeted government institutions in Damascus with suicide bombers and has led successful attacks on military bases and strategic territory in the country's north.

The suicide bombings are part of relentless violence that has engulfed Syria since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011.

On Monday, activists said troops battled rebels in several towns and villages around Damascus, including in Daraya, Arbeen and Zabadani. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the regime's forces also shelled several of the capital's suburbs.

The areas outside Damascus have been rebel strongholds since the uprising began. In recent months, the rebels have used them as a base from which they have been trying to push into central Damascus, the seat of Assad's power.

In the north, troops clashed with rebels in al-Hasaka province along Syria's border with Turkey, the Observatory said, adding that at least 10 rebels were killed in the fighting that erupted Sunday after the opposition fighters attacked a government checkpoint.

International efforts to stop the bloodshed in Syria have repeatedly failed and both sides fighting in the civil war are convinced they can defeat the other on the battlefield.

In France, Fabius pleaded for countries to keep their promises of financial aid to the Syrian opposition or risk compromising the legitimacy of the Syrian National Coalition in the eyes of the people fighting the Assad regime.

The opposition coalition was formed in November, nike blazers womens. More than 100 countries have back the umbrella group, decreeing it the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people. France was the first to confer such recognition.

"We have to give the Syrian people a clear signal: We are at your side," Fabius told representatives of some 50 nations.

Not all the promises of funding and other aid made at the Friends of Syria group's conference in December in Marrakech, Morocco, have materialized, nike blazers for women. France, which has spearheaded the formation of a viable opposition in exile, wants to make sure that backing that has been promised actually comes through.

More than $100 million was promised in Marrakech, but it's unclear how much has been sent.

Three Syrian National Coalition's vice-presidents attended the Paris gathering, which comes two days before a donor conference in Kuwait.

Amos, the U.N. official, said she went to Syria from Lebanon by land on Sunday because of insecurity around the Damascus International Airport that has witnessed fighting and air raids for weeks.

In recent months, several officials, including special U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, have flown to Beirut and then traveled by land to Damascus because of the fighting.

Amos hoped that Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq or Jordan don't close their borders with Syria. She said funds are needed to help refugees and those countries that are receiving them.

Amos spoke two days ahead of a donor conference for Syria that will be held in Kuwait. More than half a million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries and there are hundreds of thousands who are internally displaced.

Apple's iPad to fall behind Android as tablet

Apple's iPad to fall behind Android as tablet war grows

By Noel Randewich

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shipments of tablets running Google Inc's Android will overtake the iPad this year for the first time, research house IDC predicted on Tuesday, as Apple Inc cedes more mobile market share to hard-charging rivals around the globe.

A growing variety of smaller and cheaper Android tablets from Google to Amazon.com Inc will catch on this year with more consumers and chip away at Apple's dominance since the first iPad launched in 2010, International Data Corp said.

iPad and iPhone shipments are expected to keep growing at enviable rates, but arch-rival Samsung Electronics and others have hurt Apple with a combination of savvy marketing, greater variety and rapid technology adoption.

On Thursday, Samsung takes the wraps off the fourth generation of its flagship Galaxy, the smartphone that helped the South Korean giant knock the iPhone off its top ranking for part of last year.

A growing perception that the company co-founded by Steve Jobs may be losing its competitive edge has weighed on its shares, which have lost more than a third of their value since hitting a high in September.

IPHONE COULD GO WAY OF BLACKBERRY?

In the latest criticism from Wall Street, nike blazers for women, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek on Tuesday compared Apple to Blackberry saying the iPhone is now on the defensive against Samsung's devices.

"Historically when handset makers fall out of favor (e.g., the Razr, Blackberry, HTC) they fall faster/further than expected," Misek said.

Now, IDC says Apple may begin losing some its lead on tablets as well, though it remains the top seller among manufacturers.

iPad shipments are expected to account for 46 percent of the tablet market in 2013, down from 51 percent last year, IDC said. Devices running Android are expected to grow their market share to 49 percent this year from 42 percent last year.

Google's Nexus 7 tablet and Amazon.com Inc's Kindle, which uses its own customization of Android, made major inroads with consumers last year. In November, Apple launched its own foray into smaller-sized tablets with the iPad mini.

"One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size. And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond," IDC said in a press release.

APPLE REVS GROWTH SLOWS

Last month, Hewlett-Packard Co announced the launch of the Slate 7 tablet powered by Android, a centerpiece of that company's effort to expand from the shrinking personal market into mobile.

Apple is expected to grow its revenue by $26 billion in its fiscal year ending in September, nike blazers vintage, just over half of the $48 billion increase in revenue it saw the year before, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

A group of suppliers that depend on Apple for more than half of their business saw its sales slump 31 percent in February compared to January, according to Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, who does not identify the companies in the group.

Shares of Cirrus Logic, cheap nike Griffey, which gets three quarters of its revenue from selling audio chips to Apple, have fallen 23 percent this year, including a 2.89 percent drop on Tuesday.

Many component suppliers to Apple, like Qualcomm and Toshiba, also do significant business with Android device manufacturers.

"The open ecosystem at Android has allowed there to be more suppliers. As a chip guy, I always want to have as many irons in the fire as possible because the ride at the top tends to only last five years," said RBC analyst Doug Freedman.

Underscoring the increasing opportunity in mobile for Apple and its competitors, IDC also raised its 2013 tablet shipment forecast to 190.9 million units, up from its previous forecast of 172.4 million units.

Last year, global tablet shipments grew to 128.3 million units, up from 72 million in 2011, according to IDC.

In the smartphone market, which reached 545 million units shipped last year, Apple has already fallen behind Samsung.

Samsung is likely to sell 290 million smartphones this year, up 35 percent from 2012, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple's smartphone sales are projected to reach 180 million this year, up 33 percent.

IDC said tablets running Microsoft's Windows 8 platform would grow their market share from 1 percent last year to 7.4 percent in 2017.

Tablets running the Windows RT operating system, which is not compatible with older software that runs on Windows, will see their market share stay below 3 percent through 2017, IDC said.

"Consumers aren't buying Windows RT's value proposition, and long term we think Microsoft and its partners would be better served by focusing their attention on improving Windows 8," IDC said.

GENEVA (Reuters) - U.N. human rights investigator Carla del Ponte said on Monday the "time has come" for the Security Council to refer war crimes in Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for prosecution, nike blazer prezzo.

Association Releases New "High Friction Surface" Publication in Support of Federal Highway Administration's "Every Day Counts" Initiative

FREDERICKSBURG, Va., March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --An international roadway safety association - the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) has released an all-new publication designed to provide transportation agencies and local governments with information on a relatively new lifesaving technology the installation of high friction surfacing on America's roadways.

High friction surfacing treatments result when small-sized polish and wear-resistant aggregates are bonded to the pavement surface with a resin product. The treated surface increases a motor vehicle's braking capacity significantly.

The new publication, "Safety Opportunities in High Friction Surfacing," provides an overview of the technology and case studies that demonstrate where installations of the new surface treatment have resulted in significant reductions in motor vehicle crashes. The publication also aligns itself with the Federal Highway Administrations' (FHWA) "Every Day Counts" initiative, which is, according to the agency's website, "designed to identify and deploy innovation aimed at shortening project delivery, enhancing the safety of our roadways and protecting the environment."

"The effort to complete this new publication is one of many joint efforts over the last year in which the roadway safety industry has partnered with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to ensure that this latest lifesaving roadway technology is understood and applied correctly as a speed countermeasure to increase braking and vehicle control to reduce crashes, nike blazer high, especially at horizontal curves and intersections," said ATSSA's High Friction Surfacing Council Chairman Robert Dingess.

ATSSA's President and Chief Executive Officer Roger Wentz added, "Both the Federal Highway Administration and AASHTO's pavement and safety staff provided genuine leadership in testing and documenting the benefits of high friction surfacing for a number of years. We feel the case studies in this new publication will serve as an excellent resource for state and local agencies facing similar safety problems."

Since 1969, ATSSA has represented companies and individuals in the traffic control and roadway safety industry. Over 1,nike blazers,600 ATSSA members provide the majority of features, services and devices used to make our nation's roadways safer. These include pavement markings, road signs, work zone traffic control devices, guardrail, and other roadside safety features.

Bahrain government says reconciliation talks set t

Bahrain government says reconciliation talks set to resume

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain's government said on Wednesday talks aimed at breaking nearly two years of political deadlock would proceed after opposition groups seeking a parliamentary democracy accepted an invitation from the king.

Bahrain is a key ally of Washington in a stand-off with Iran since it provides a base for the U.S. navy's Fifth Fleet.

The small island state has been in political turmoil since protests led by majority Shi'ite Muslims demanding democratic change in the Sunni-led monarchy erupted in early 2011.

Information Minister Samira Rajab told Reuters on Wednesday that the government would ask all parties to nominate representatives to the talks, which could start soon provided they were "very serious" about dialogue, nike blazer low.

"Their statement was positive," Rajab said of the opposition's acceptance of the invitation, womens nike blazers.

"All the steps will start, nike air force ones. I think the timeframe will go fast, as long as all the parties are willing to go through positive, very serious dialogue," she said.

She said the government would moderate the event, help arrange the agenda and implement any recommendations that it produced.

"As far as I understand, the government won't be represented there. They will be the moderators, the regulator," she said without elaborating.

Thirty-five people died during the uprising and over two months of martial law in 2011, but the opposition says that figure has risen to over 80. The government rejects the attribution of many of those deaths to the political conflict.

It accused opposition groups of sabotaging Bahrain's image and being linked to Shi'ite Muslim power Iran. Protesters and opposition parties said they want to end the ruling family's domination by giving parliament full powers to legislate and form governments.

Martial law has since been lifted and Bahrain has introduced some reforms, which the opposition has dismissed as cosmetic and smaller scale protests have continued.

Opposition groups say previous promises of constructive dialogue by the authorities have come to nothing and accuse the government of continuing to crush dissent.

But they welcomed the latest invitation from King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa, saying they hoped the gesture was serious.

Khalil al-Marzouq, an official of the main opposition group Wefaq, said he had no details on how the talks would be organized. The government was usually slow in providing information about such matters, he said.

Shi'ite Muslims complain of discrimination in the electoral system, jobs, housing, education and government departments.

Talks in July 2011 ended inconclusively after Wefaq pulled out, complaining it had not been allowed enough representation at the negotiations, and there were too many handpicked participants to reach a meaningful consensus.

Barnes & Noble posts 3Q loss as Nook demand slows_

Barnes & Noble posts 3Q loss as Nook demand slows

NEW YORK (AP) Physical books may have a longer shelf life than expected. Barnes & Noble posted a third-quarter loss on Thursday, partly because demand for its e-books and Nook e-book readers have plummeted.

Many have predicted the eventual demise of physical books, as e-book readers and e-book demand soars. But that trend appears to be slowing, at least with the Nook, according to Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch. And digital "cannibalization" consumers buying e-books instead of physical books has also slowed.

The company reported said sales of digital media including digital books, digital newspapers and magazines, and apps rose just 7 percent during the fiscal third quarter. Sales had risen 38 percent in the second quarter and 46 percent in the first quarter.

Barnes & Noble, based in New York, has invested heavily in its Nook e-book readers and a digital library as more readers shift to electronic books and competition has grown from discount stores and online rivals.

"After the hyper growth in the e-book market over the last few years, consumers have settled into their book formats of choice, and while e-books will continue to drive growth in the book category in the future, physical book sales will have a longer tail (or longer life expectancy) than previously anticipated," he said in a call with investors.

The Nook unit has attracted investors Microsoft owns 16.8 percent, while U.K. publisher and education company Pearson has a 5 percent stake. But aside from investor funding, it has not been profitable, and has fared worse than its competitors, Amazon.com's Kindle and Apple Inc.'s iPad and iPad Mini.

The company acknowledged it needs to take significant steps to make the Nook unit profitable, or try to spin it off. Lynch said cost cutting and other measures are forthcoming, and Barnes & Noble shares rose nearly 8 percent.

The Nook weighed on the retail stores. Revenue in the entire retail unit, nike blazer hi, which includes the bookstores and website, fell 10 percent to $1.51 billion. Revenue in stores open in at least one year fell 7.3 percent, and store closings and lower online sales also hurt results. But excluding Nook sales, revenue in Barnes & Noble stores open at least one year fell 2.2 percent in the fourth quarter.

Revenue from the chain's college bookstore unit fell nearly 2 percent to $517 million.

The company has 689 bookstores in 50 states as well as 674 college bookstores.

In the fiscal third quarter through Jan. 26,nike blazer prezzo, the New York company posted a loss of $6.1 million, or 18 cents per share. The company blamed the loss in part on charges stemming from the weaker-than-expected sales of Nook e-readers during the holiday shopping season. Analysts had expected a profit of 53 cents per share.

In the same period the year before, the New York company posted a profit of $52 million, or 71 cents per share.

Revenue fell 9 percent to $2.22 billion analysts polled by FactSet predicted a more modest decline, to $2.4 billion.

Nook revenue fell 26 percent to $316 million. Barnes & Noble company recorded $21 million in returns due to weak demand during the holiday season, and $15 million in allowances for promotions.

"Coming off the holiday shortfall, we're in the process of making some adjustments to our strategy as we continue to pursue the exciting growth opportunities ahead for us in the consumer and digital education content markets, nike air force ones," he said.

In a call with investors, Lynch also addressed the offer of Leonard Riggio, Barnes & Noble's founder, to buy the physical bookstores and website of Barnes & Noble, but not the Nook unit. No terms or other details have been announced.

"We can't comment further on Len Riggio's plan to make a proposal to purchase the retail business other than to confirm ongoing discussions between Len and the strategic committee of the board," Lynch said Thursday.

For fiscal 2013, the company expects revenue in stores open at least one year to fall in the low- to mid-single digit range. Revenue in stores open at least one year in its college bookstores are expected to fall by a low single digit percentage.

Shares rose $1.18, or 7.8 percent, to $16.41 during midday trading. The stock has traded between $10.45 and $26 during the past 52 weeks.

AP launches its first Spanish-language stylebook_2

AP launches its first Spanish-language stylebook

NEW YORK (AP) Spanish-language journalists can now learn that the correct word for channel-surfing is "zapeo," sexting is best written in their language as "sextear," ''submarino" is an accepted term for waterboarding and Thanksgiving day is accurately translated as "Dia de Accion de Gracias."

Those and thousands of other terms are included in the first-ever Spanish Stylebook published by The Associated Press, designed as the go-to reference guide for journalists, writers, editors and scholars of the language spoken by an estimated 450 million people globally.

The online stylebook was presented at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York, with a panel of editors from the news cooperative and other media organizations discussing the intricacies of writing in Spanish.

"I think the media has a moral responsibility to use the correct Spanish, because it is the only thing we can bequeath to future generations," Isaac Lee, news editor for the Spanish-language television station Univision, said at the Monday presentation, nike blazers.

The Spanish Stylebook currently has more than 3,500 entries on topics including finance, sports, entertainment and fashion.

The original AP Stylebook in English, which first came out in 1953, has long been the gold standard of style reference books in the journalism industry, with paperback copies still commonly scattered around the newsrooms of media outlets in the United States and the world. Now also online, the English Stylebook is more than just a collection of rules and has been described as part dictionary, part encyclopedia and part textbook for writers and editors.

With 486 pages containing 4,825 entries, the English-language version of the AP Stylebook is recognized worldwide as an essential reference for good writing. With the Spanish-language version, the original concept remains: to provide a uniform presentation of the printed word, to make a story written anywhere understandable everywhere.

AP editors said the Spanish Stylebook aims to unify standards for that language in order to improve communication among speakers of the language worldwide, cheap nike blazer.

"Our objective with this stylebook is to apply a universal Spanish and counter the use of regionalisms that in many occasions cause confusion," said Jorge Covarrubias, a veteran editor with the AP's Spanish news service and among the authors of the Stylebook.

Marjorie Miller, AP's Editor for Latin America and the Caribbean, called the reference book "an essential tool" for Spanish language media, some of which she said had tried to translate the English Stylebook themselves.

"We were hearing from a lot of clients that there was a need for this," she said.

Miller noted that because it is online the Stylebook can be continually updated to incorporate new terms and usage with input from users.

Spanish words can differ dramatically from country to country, and users of AP's Spanish Stylebook will be able to discover the different meanings of words such as "guagua," which means "bus" in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, but "baby" in the Southern Cone. The Stylebook notes that in Spanish, a swimming pool is called "alberca" in some countries, and "pileta" or "piscina" in others.

The guide also includes newly minted terms from the world of online social media, such as "tuit" for Tweet, or "emoticono" for emoticon.

AP's standards editor, Thomas Kent, stressed the need to use Spanish with precision, including in reference to immigration issues.

While AP's Spanish Stylebook allows the use of "illegal immigrant," the term must be used with care, Kent said. The term does not fit, he said, in the case of a child brought to the United States by parents who entered the country illegally. He noted that the Stylebook allows many different terms to describe an individual's precise legal status.

Edward Schumacher-Matos, NPR's ombudsman and founder of the Spanish media company Rumbo Newspapers/Meximerica Media, said different terms are necessary to describe a wide range of immigrant experiences.

"I understand that there are people who would rather not use the term 'illegal immigrant,' but there are others who understand it that way and prefer to see it described that way," said Schumacher-Matos.

Still being studied is the difference in how accent marks are handled by the AP's two Stylebooks.

AP's Spanish service uses accent marks common to the written language. But AP's English-language stories do not use accents for Hispanic names or other Spanish words for technological reasons. Accents don't transmit through all computer systems of members in the AP cooperative or other English-language subscribers, and can sometimes show up as garble in newspapers and websites.

The Spanish-language online guide, nike blazers for women, which includes a chapter on the AP's journalistic principles, is now being offered only to clients of the AP's Spanish news service, but will be available for others early next year. The cost is $26 a year for an individual subscription and $210 a year for a license of up to 10 people, an introductory rate which is one third of the regular price.

Afghan policewoman kills US adviser in Kabul_2 -re

Afghan policewoman kills US adviser in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) An Afghan policewoman walked into a high-security compound in Kabul Monday and killed an American contractor with a single bullet to the chest, the first such shooting by a woman in a spate of insider attacks by Afghans against their foreign allies.

Afghan officials who provided details identified the attacker as police Sgt. Nargas, a mother of four with a clean record. The shooting was outside the police headquarters in a walled compound which houses the governor's office, courts and a prison in the heart of the capital.

A police official said she was able to enter the compound armed because she was licensed to carry a weapon as a police officer.

The American, whose identity was not released, was a civilian adviser who worked with the NATO command. He was shot as he came out of a small shop, Kabul Governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa told The Associated Press. The woman refused to explain her motive for her attack, he said.

The fact that a woman was behind the assault shocked some Afghans.

"I was very shaken when I heard the news," said Nasrullah Sadeqizada, an independent member of Parliament. "This is the first female to carry out such an attack. It is very surprising and sad," he added, calling for more careful screening of all candidates, male and female, for the police force.

According to NATO, some 1,400 women were serving in the Afghan police force mid-year with 350 in the army -- still a very small proportion of the 350,000 in both services. Such professions are still generally frowned upon in this conservative society but women have made significant gains in recent years, with most jobs and education opportunities open to them, at least by law if not always in practice.

This is in stark contrast to the repression they suffered under the former Taliban regime, which forced women to be virtual prisoners in their homes, and severely punished them for even small infractions of the draconian codes.

The NATO command said that while the investigation continued, there might be "some temporary, prudent measures put into place to reduce the exposure of our people." But a NATO spokesman, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Lester T. Carroll, said the vital mission of training the Afghan police "remained unchanged."

There have been more than 60 insider attacks this year against foreign military and civilian personnel. They represent another looming security issue as President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai prepare to meet early next year to discuss the pullout of NATO troops from Afghanistan by 2014 and the size and nature of a residual force the United States will keep in the country.

Insider attacks by Afghan soldiers or police have accelerated this year as NATO forces, due to mostly withdraw from the country by 2014, have speeded up efforts to train and advise Afghan security before the pullout.

The surge in such attacks is throwing doubt on the capability of the Afghan security forces to take over from international troops and has further undermined public support for the war in NATO countries.

It has also stoked suspicion among some NATO units of their Afghan counterparts, although others enjoy close working relations with Afghan military and police.

As such attacks mounted this year, U.S. officials in Kabul and Washington insisted they were "isolated incidents" and withheld details.

An AP investigation earlier this month showed that at least 63 coalition troops mostly Americans had been killed and more than 85 wounded in at least 46 insider attacks. That's an average of nearly one attack a week. In 2011, 21 insider attacks killed 35 coalition troops.

There have also been incidents of Taliban and other militants dressing in Afghan army and police uniforms to infiltrate NATO installations and attack foreigners.

In February, two U.S. soldiers died from an attack by an Afghan policeman at the Interior Ministry in Kabul. The incident forced NATO to temporarily pull out their advisers from a number of ministries and police units and revise procedures in dealing with Afghan counterparts.

More than 50 Afghan members of the government's security forces also have died this year in attacks by their own colleagues. Taliban militants claim such attacks reflect a growing popular opposition to both foreign military presence and the Kabul government.

In the latest attack, the governor said Nargas, who like many Afghans goes by one name, had asked bystanders where the governor's office was located before confronting the American.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said she fired only one shot that struck the American in the chest. He died either on the way or just upon arrival at a hospital, the spokesman added, describing her act as a "huge crime." He said the woman attempted to run away, pistol still in hand, after the shooting. But she was subdued by police.

She was taken into Afghan custody and Sediqi said she refused to answer questions after hours of interrogation aimed at determining her motives.

Nargas had worked with a human rights department of the police for two years and had earlier been a refugee in Pakistan and Iran, Kabul Deputy Police Chief Mohammad Daoud Amin said.

She could enter the compound armed because as a police officer, she was licensed to carry a pistol, Amin said. He said he did not know whether the killer and victim were acquainted.

"Her background is very clean, nike blazer high. We don't see that she had any connection with armed insurgent groups," Sediqi said. He added that she aroused no suspicion because she frequently went back and forth on business between the compound and the Interior Ministry where she worked.

Canadian Brig. Gen. John C,nike blazers women. Madower, another NATO command spokesman in Kabul, called the incident "a very sad occasion" and said his "prayers are with the loved ones of the deceased."

The killing came just hours after an Afghan policeman shot five of his colleagues at a checkpoint in northern Afghanistan late Monday. The attacker then stole his colleague's weapons and fled to join the Taliban, nike vintage blazer, said deputy provincial governor in Jawzjan province, Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani.

Separately, U.S. military officials were investigating the apparent suicide of a Navy SEAL commander in Afghanistan. A U.S. military official in Washington said Cmdr. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pa., died Saturday of a noncombat-related injury in Uruzgan province. The official said the death "appears to be the result of a suicide."

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the death is still being investigated.

ANA president sees Boeing progress on batteries -r

ANA president sees Boeing progress on batteries

TOKYO (AP) The president of All Nippon Airways, Boeing's biggest single customer for its troubled 787 Dreamliner, said Friday that he believes the U.S. manufacturer has made progress in resolving problems with the aircraft's lithium-ion batteries.

How soon Boeing can fix the problems, which have led to the 787s being grounded worldwide for over a month, depends partly on the approval process by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said Shinichiro Ito, who took up the positions of president of ANA Holdings Inc. and chairman of All Nippon Airways on Thursday.

"It isn't up to me to say how far they've gotten in resolving this," Ito said, after ANA management met earlier this week with Boeing CEO Ray Conner.

Connor is visiting Tokyo to explain to Japanese transport regulators and airlines his company's proposal for fixing the problems with overheating of the 787's lithium-ion batteries.

ANA, which has 17 of the 787s as Boeing's launch customer, has stood by the Dreamliner, while trying to minimize the impact on its operations from the battery fiasco.

"If the battery problem is resolved, I am confident the aircraft will be fine," Ito said. "Once the (Boeing proposal) is approved, we will discuss when to resume operations, nike blazers for women."

But Ito acknowledged that ANA has a challenge in reassuring its customers. If the grounding of the aircraft drags on beyond June, the carrier will have to make more drastic changes in its scheduling and other plans, he said.

On Thursday, Boeing's Conner met with Akihiro Ota, who heads the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and with the director general of the Civil Aviation Bureau.

"I just want to reiterate that the 787 is still the game-changing aircraft it is meant to be," Conner told reporters between meetings in Tokyo. He would not give details of Boeing's plan, but said it had come up with a solution "that addresses all probable causes of the incidents in the aircraft."

"It is not an interim solution. This is a permanent solution," Conner said. "We are very hopeful that we will get the aircraft back in the air very soon."

Dreamliners were grounded after an overheated battery aboard an ANA 787 domestic flight forced an emergency landing in Japan on Jan. 16. Investigators are still probing the cause of that event, and of a Jan. 7 fire that erupted in an auxiliary power unit battery of a JAL 787 about a half-hour after the plane landed at Boston's Logan International Airport.

Boeing's plan, presented to U.S. regulators last week, calls for revamping the batteries to prevent potential short-circuiting from spreading from any one battery cell to others.

Officials in the U.S. said Boeing would fix the problem with the batteries overheating by having more robust ceramic insulation around each of the battery's eight cells so as to prevent any thermal runaway, nike blazer low, a chemical reaction that leads to progressively hotter temperatures that was found in damaged batteries in JAL and ANA incidents.

"This solution takes into account any possible event that might occur," Conner said. "We see nothing in the technology that would tell us it's not the appropriate thing to do," he said.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is considering the plan.

There are a total of 50 of the planes in service worldwide, and Boeing had orders for 800 of the airliners at the time they were grounded.

ANA has extended the cancellations of its 787 flights to May 31, with the total number of flights affected at nearly 3,600, involving some 167,820 passengers. JAL has cancelled its 787 flights through Mar. 30,nike sb blazer.

Migraines May Hamper Kids' School Performance

Children with migraine headaches may do worse in school than other students, a new study suggests.

Kids in the study who suffered episodic migraines (i.e., migraines occurring fewer than 14 days each month) were 1.3 times more likely perform below average in school, compared to kids who didn't have any type of headache. And kids with chronic migraines (i.e., migraines occurring 15 or more days each month) were 1.6 times more likely to perform below average in school, botas north face, compared to kids without headaches.

"For years, we've had few studies that have linked the symptoms of migraines to the burden on children and families," said Dr. Lenora Lehwald, a neurologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Studies such as this one may help get "buy-in" from schools in helping kids who suffer migraines get prompt treatment, she said.

"Children with migraines need immediate treatment, or their meds won't work as well," said Lehwald, who was not involved in the study, chaquetas the north face baratas. "Having the school understand the significance of the headache helps move the treatment more quickly along," she said.

Kids with migraines often have to deal not only with their physical pain, but also the frustration of adults not understanding the condition, Lehwald said, nuptse jacket the north face. "This is not a malingering child, this is a pathology that needs treatment."

Migraines and school

In the study, researchers looked at 5,700 children in Brazil, between ages 5 and 12, collecting data by interviewing teachers and parents. The study was conducted by researchers at Merck & Co., a pharmaceutical company, and is published today (Oct. 29) in the journal Neurology.

Of the 1,108 children in the study who had no headaches, 257 (23 percent) were rated by their teachers as performing below average in school. By contrast, of the 486 children with episodic migraines, 158 (33 percent) were rated as performing below average, and 13 of the 35 (37 percent) of children with chronic migraines were rated as such.

In addition, the study showed that kids with migraines were also more likely to have missed at least one day of school in the last six months, and more likely to have left school before the end of the school day, as compared with children who get tension headaches rather than migraines, the north face madrid outlet.

In her experience treating children who suffer migraines, Lehwald said, she has met some patients who feel the school doesn’t understand how physically debilitating their symptoms can be. "The school may think the kid is making up the symptoms. Kids feel very discouraged, and like nobody understands."

Such feelings may further affect children's moods and self-esteem, and make them even less likely to report their symptoms, she said.

What parents can do

Parents can also help their help children who have migraines do better in school by keeping them on regular schedules, tiendas north face barcelona, Lehwald said. For children with migraines, "having a very even-keel lifestyle puts them less at risk of having a migraine. Staying hydrated, not skipping meals, adhering to a good sleep schedule," can all help, she said. "They need a predictable 24-hour schedule."

Parents can also model for their children the type of attention they need to give to their migraines as soon as one starts. A migraine “can be a really debilitating experience if not treated as an emergency. Parents can help a child learn that, too."

Pass it on: Kids with migraine headaches may face difficulties in school, a new study finds.

the north face mujer medical marijuana

Pot town pushes back against industrial growers
,chaquetas north face

ARCATA, Calif. (AP) Happily isolated on California's remote Humboldt County coast, Arcata has long made room in its heart for marijuana, whether grown illegally in the back woods by refugees of the Summer of Love, or legally in the back rooms of homes by medical pot patients.

But the mellow days are coming to an end. Even Arcata residents who support legalization of marijuana have become fed up with high-volume indoor growing operations that take over much-needed housing and take advantage of the state's loosely written medical marijuana law.

The neighbors of these clandestine pot farms operated behind curtains, shutters and alarm systems complain of the skunk-like stink of cannabis, fire hazards, rising rents, vicious guard dogs, caches of guns, illegal pesticides, roadside dumping of unwanted growing gear, and late-night visits from shady characters.

Rather than throw more cops at the problem, the City Council is fighting back in a way befitting this liberal outpost that would rather be known for its pioneering community forest and sewage treatment marsh than marijuana.

Measure I on next week's ballot would impose a 45 percent electricity tax on households with medical and other exceptions that use three times the amount of power a typical family home does. The measure takes aim at commercial growers who maximize production by packing homes full of high intensity lights and irrigation systems that gobble electricity and sometimes cause fires from overloaded circuits.

"Our hope is to drive the large-scale growing operations out of town, cazadoras the north face," said Shane Brinton, a city councilman and vice mayor who has pushed the novel idea.

"I don't view it as anti-marijuana," said Brinton. "It's a land-use issue, a public safety issue, and environmental issue as well."

If it passes, it would be the first measure of its kind in the nation aimed at marijuana growers, said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The amount of electricity that would subject a resident to the tax amounts to a $700 per month bill, and is equivalent to the power used by a big chain drug store. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. reports that 633 homes one in 15 are using that much juice, indicating they are raising pot rather than families.

If that many growers decide to absorb the tax instead of getting out of town, the tax would generate $1.2 million, or nearly 4 percent of the city's $31.7 million budget.

Located on the rainy coast 280 miles north of San Francisco, Arcata is a city of 17,000 that dates to the days when mule trains carried goods from the shipping port to the Gold Rush Country. The lumber and fishing industry here have fallen on hard times, but Humboldt State University is a foundation of the local economy, with contributions from niche manufacturers of gourmet cookies, kayaking gear and goat cheese.

Since the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s, marijuana has been creeping into the culture and economy, and now permeates it, said Tony Silvaggio, a Humboldt State sociologist and a founder of the Humboldt Institute of Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research.

"This is the center of marijuana culture in the universe, tienda the north face madrid," he said. "One of the reasons is we have a very tolerant attitude toward marijuana. Word gets around, and people come here with the sole purpose to grow marijuana indoors..."

Unlike some other states' medical marijuana laws, California's Compassionate Use Act of 1996 sets no limits on plants or processed marijuana, does not prohibit the sale of excess medical marijuana to other patients or dispensaries, does not require patients or growers to register, and does not lay out which diseases or conditions can be treated with marijuana. When growers get busted, they often claim they are growing for patients.

Based on interviews with hundreds of growers, Silvaggio said even medical marijuana growers usually sell their extra, so the two markets cannot be separated. "Part of the problem with the marijuana economy is it is unregulatable," he said.

Several years ago, people here began realizing that whole blocks of houses had been taken over by illegal growers, said Kevin Hoover, editor of the irreverent weekly newspaper The Arcata Eye.

"We came to realize we weren't really dealing with hippies and the Zig Zag man. It was this industry, resolve the north face," said Hoover. "More than the dangers, it was this loss of neighborhood community. You can't have your neighbor take in the paper when you're on vacation. You can't borrow a cup of sugar."

To get their neighborhoods back, more and more people are informing on their neighbors, said Police Chief Tom Chapman.

Police are making progress, but still hardly making a dent.

In 2010 Arcata police served search warrants on six houses and in 2011 that rose to 14. So far this year, police investigated 48 houses, and got warrants to search 17. But only nine produced enough evidence for criminal prosecution. Police had to buy two huge shipping containers to haul off growing equipment.

Driving an unmarked SUV with his guitar in the back seat he plays in a classic rock band Chapman points out house after house. One bust produced 750 plants and 13 pounds of processed marijuana. Another was a half block from a grassy playground where kids and dogs romped.

"This is Small Town USA," he said. "The people who live here are a bunch of working folks, salt of the earth, people just trying to get by."

A typical grower, the chief said, is a 20- or 30-something from outside the area, who has moved into a house with an absentee landlord. They pay their rent on time with cash that stinks of marijuana.

"Most of the landlords claim ignorance, the north face mujer," he said.

Marnin Robbins has seen a half-dozen houses in his neighborhood raided by police.

"I don't have a problem with marijuana," he said. "But I do have a problem with people turning their houses into factories and bringing a violent element into our neighborhood."

Measure I has no organized opposition. But Mark Sailors, who drives a pedal cab downtown and grows medical marijuana for himself, his wife and his mother, has long felt city attempts to control medicinal cannabis are hypocritical.

"This is just another in a long line of what I call Arcata's medical marijuana Jim Crow laws," Sailors said. "They pay a lot of lip service to being pro-Compassionate Use Act. But all their actions are trying to limit people and discourage the use" of medical marijuana.

5 Presidential Elections Nastier and Stranger Than This One

Reading the political news, you'd think this election is the nastiest, most contentious and most important our nation has ever faced. No doubt the outcome matters, but in the annals of American elections, this one barely registers for sheer strangeness.

In fact, electoral politics have always been a down-and-dirty business, starting at least as early as 1800, when our founding fathers proved themselves adept at bitter battles. Other elections have featured nasty accusations, bizarre happenstance and even the death of one of the candidates.

Read on for five of the strangest presidential elections in U.S. history.

1. The very first one, 1788-1789

The first presidential election in our nation's history was one-of-a-kind in that it was literally no contest. Organized political parties had yet to form, and George Washington ran unopposed. His victory is the only one in the nation's history to feature 100 percent of the Electoral College vote. [Quiz: Weirdest Presidential Elections]

The real question in 1788 was who would become vice president. At the time, this office was awarded to the runner-up in the electoral vote (each elector cast two votes to ensure there would be a runner-up.) Eleven candidates made a play for the vice-presidency, but John Adams came out on top.

2. It's a tie, 1800

Electoral politics got serious in 1800,louis vuitton damier graphite belt. Forget the hand-holding peace of George Washington's first run political parties were in full swing by this time, and they battled over high-stakes issues (taxes, states' rights and foreign policy alignments). Thomas Jefferson ran as the Democratic-Republican candidate and John Adams as the Federalist.

At the time, states got to pick their own election days, so voting ran from April to October (and you thought waiting for the West Coast polls to close was frustrating). Because of the complicated "pick two" voting structure in the Electoral College, the election ended up a tie between Jefferson and his vice-presidential pick, Aaron Burr. One South Carolina delegate was supposed to give one of his votes on another candidate, so as to arrange for Jefferson to win and Burr to come in second. The plan somehow went wrong, and both men ended up with 73 electoral votes.

That sent the tie-breaking vote to the House of Representatives, not all of whom were on board with a Jefferson presidency and Burr vice-presidency. Seven tense days of voting followed, but Jefferson finally pulled ahead of Burr. The drama triggered the passage of the 12th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which stipulates that the Electoral College pick the president and vice-president separately, doing away with the runner-up complications.

3. Things get nasty, 1828

Anything involving dueling war veteran Andrew Jackson was liable to get dirty, but the 1828 electoral battle between Jackson and John Quincy Adams took the cake for mud slinging. Jackson had lost out to Adams in 1824 after Speaker of the House Henry Clay cast a tie-breaking vote. When Adams chose Clay as his Secretary of State, Jackson was furious and accused the two of a "corrupt bargain."

And that was before the 1828 election even got started, when Adams was accused of pimping out an American girl to a Russian Czar. Jackson's wife, Rachel, was called a "convicted adulteress," because she had, sacoche longchamp, years earlier, married Jackson before finalizing her divorce to her previous husband. Rachel died after Jackson won the election, but before his inauguration; at her funeral, Jackson blamed his opponents' bigamy accusations. "May God Almighty forgiver her murderers, as I know she forgave them," Jackson said. "I never can." [6 Most Tragic Love Stories in History]

To round out a rough election, Jackson's inauguration party (open to the public) turned into a mob scene, with thousands of well-wishers crowding into the White House.

"Ladies fainted, men were seen with bloody noses, and such a scene of confusion took place as is impossible to describe," wrote Margaret Smith, a Washington socialite who attended the party.

4. Running against a corpse, 1872

In 1872, incumbent Ulysses S. Grant had an easy run for a second term because his opponent died before the final votes were cast.

Grant had the election in the bag even before his opponent, Horace Greeley,d&g belt, died, however. The incumbent won 286 electoral votes compared with Greeley's 66 after election day. But on Nov. 29, 1872, before the Electoral College votes were in, Greeley died and his electoral votes were split among other candidates. Greeley remains the only presidential candidate to die before the election was finalized.

5,nike blazers low. The hanging chads, 2000

Democrat Al Gore beat Republican George W. Bush in the popular vote in the 2000 election, but the electoral vote was a close, and controversial, call. As election night drew to a close, New Mexico, Oregon and Florida remained too close to call.

It would be Florida that determined the winner, but not until the Supreme Court weighed in. For a month, the outcome of the election remained in recount limbo, as Gore's campaign contested the vote count in several close counties and the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts engaged in a tug-of-war over whether to halt the recounts or extend their deadlines. Among the challenges faced by the hand counts: determining whether semi-attached scraps of paper, or "hanging chads," on punch-card ballots should count as votes.

Ultimately, on Dec. 12, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that a statewide recount was unconstitutional, alongside a further decision that the smaller recounts could not go forward. The decision meant the original vote counts stood, giving the election to Bush.

Billboards in Ohio Warn of Voter Fraud
,nike blazers low

Hundreds of voter fraud billboards in and around three large swing-state cities have indirect ties to Bain Capital, the investment company founded by Mitt Romney. NPR reports 85 billboards near Milwaukee and 60 among Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, announce "Voter Fraud is a Felony!" Some voting rights advocates and Democrats show concern these billboards may discourage people to vote.

How are these billboards tied to Bain Capital?

The NPR story notes Romney hasn't worked for Bain Capital for years. Every billboard space is owned by Clear Channel Outdoor, which is largely owned by Bain Capital. The person and/or group that paid for the advertising space with less than three weeks until the election remains anonymous.

Why are these signs a concern to voter advocacy groups?

Although the signs are factually accurate, concerned groups worry the location of the ads may affect minority voters. Many of the billboards can be found near Hispanic and African-American neighborhoods. Common Cause, gucci belt sale, a citizen advocacy group, plans to buy $30,000 in counter signs encouraging residents in these cities to vote. ABC News and Univision report 20 billboards will appear in neighborhoods in Cleveland where the voter fraud signs already exist.

What can be done about the voter fraud billboards?

Reuters reveals the billboards will remain visible through election day on Nov. 6. Online petitions signed by tens of thousands of people encourage Clear Channel to take down the signs. However, local Democrats fear the signs will force some people to think twice about voting. City Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland, whose district in Cleveland has most of the city's anti-fraud billboards,Nike Heels, called the ads "insidious",mens gucci belt; and will "intimidate" voters, nike lunar hyperdunk, according to Reuters article.

How often does fraud pose a serious threat to American voting rights?

The Chronicle-Telegram of northern Ohio cites statistics from two government sources that detail the ratio between number of ballots cast and instances of voter fraud convictions regarding federal elections. The report states 649 million ballots were cast in general elections from 2000 to 2010 using Census Bureau numbers. Seventy people were convicted of federal voting crimes from 2002 to 2005. Five of those were for voter registration issues. The report cited Justice Department figures regarding the convictions.

What has Clear Channel said about the controversy?

The media conglomerate was criticized for funding similar anonymous billboards in Milwaukee in 2010 during mid-term elections, according to the NPR piece. A spokesperson for Clear Channel told the national radio outlet anonymous advertisers are "against company policy" and that a "mistake was made" when the contract was signed for these billboards.

Popular Irish author Maeve Binchy dies at 72

LONDON (AP) Bestselling Irish author Maeve Binchy, longchamp soldes, one of Ireland's most popular writers who sold more than 40 million books worldwide, died in Dublin after a brief illness, Irish media and national leaders said. She was 72 years old.

She was best known for her depictions of human relationships and their crises in such books as "Circle of Friends" and "Tara Road," based mainly in the small towns of Ireland but also in London.

"We have lost a national treasure," said Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny.

The Irish Times, her former employer, told The Associated Press it had spoken to Binchy's family and said the acclaimed author had died in a Dublin hospital on Monday with her husband, Gordon Snell, by her side.

"She was an outstanding novelist, short story writer and columnist, who engaged millions of people all around the world with her fluent and accessible style," said Ireland's president, Michael D. Higgins.

"In recent years she showed great courage and thankfully never lost her self-deprecating humor, honesty and remarkable integrity as an artist and human being," Higgins said.

Binchy wrote 16 novels, four collections of short stories, a play and a novella. Her work landed her on The New York Times' bestseller list and in Oprah's Book Club.

In recent years she continued to write despite being slowed down by arthritis and a heart ailment.

"I do realize that I am a popular writer who people buy to take on vacation. I'm an escapist kind of writer," Binchy said in an interview with the BookReporter website.

"I was just lucky I lived in this time of mass-market paperbacks," she added.

Describing her childhood in Dalkey in County Dublin, Binchy wrote on her official website that she was "full of enthusiasms, mad fantasies, desperate urges to be famous and anxious to be a saint. "

After graduating from University College Dublin, Binchy worked as a teacher before becoming a journalist, columnist and editor at the Irish Times, one of the country's leading newspapers.

She later moved to England, where she became the newspaper's London editor in the early 1970s.

Her first novel, "Light a Penny Candle," was published in 1982 after being rejected by five publishers and became a bestseller.

That book led to an invitation to appear on a French TV program, "a terrifying serious program about books," she recalled two years ago in an interview with Donald O'Donoghue of broadcaster RTE.

"Suddenly they asked me, as only the French would, 'Madame, what is your philosophy of life?' What a cosmic question, but I had to answer, and answer quickly, because it was live.

"So I said, in French, 'I think that you've got to play the hand that you're dealt and stop wishing for another hand.'"

"Circle of Friends" and "Tara Road," and her short story "How About You" were turned into films. Two other novels, "Echoes" and "The Lilac Bus," were filmed for television.

"Tara Road," about Irish and American women who switch homes without having met, was chosen by U.S. TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey for her popular book club, bringing her many new readers, sac longchamp solde.

She had announced in her column in 2000 that "Scarlet Feather" would be her last novel, prompting more than 800 people to write in protest to The Irish Times.

A new novel, "Quentins," appeared in 2002.

In the same year, she suffered a health crisis related to a heart condition, and doctors warned that it would restrict her activity, nike vintage blazer. Her time in hospital waiting rooms, absorbing the conversations of patients, inspired another novel, "Heart and Soul," in 2009.

Binchy's novel "Minding Frankie" was published in 2010, the same year she received a lifetime achievement honor from the Irish Book Awards. Her latest novel, "A Week in Winter," is to be published later this year.

In an interview two years ago, Binchy said she preferred to deal with issues which could be argued from either side, longchamp soldes.

"I often wonder that if I had met Hitler, I reckon I might have found some streak of decency in him," she told O'Donoghue.

"I once tried to write a novel about revenge. It's the only book I didn't finish. I couldn't get into the mind of the person who was plotting vengeance," she said.

The best advice, nike free run 3 womens, she added, comes from the "Coronation Street," a British soap opera: "Oh, get over yourself."

Binchy is survived by her husband, her brother, William, and her sister, Joan.

She is to be cremated Friday at a private service following a funeral Mass at the Catholic Church of the Assumption in her native Dublin district of Dalkey.

Somewhere, within me, were both Verity and Nighteyes, but they, too, were drowned in the passions of those around me. I know I killed the first Raider that went down before our mad rush. I also know that I finished the last standing man, in a battle we fought ax to ax. The song says it was the master of the Red-Ship vessel. I suppose it could have been. His leather surcoat was well made, and spattered with the blood of other men. I don't recall another thing about him except how my ax crushed his helm deep into his skull, and how the blood gouted from beneath the metal as he sank to his knees.
So the battle ended, and defenders rushed forth to embrace our crew, to shout the victory and pound one another's backs. The change was too much for me. I stood, leaning on my ax, and wondered where my strength had fled. The anger had abandoned me as suddenly as carris seed leaves an addict. I felt drained and disoriented, as if I had wakened from one dream into another. I could have dropped and slept among the bodies, so totally exhausted was I. After a time I began to be alive again. I helped to clear the bodies from the door of the tower, and then from the battlefield. The Raiders we burned, the Six Duchies men we laid out and covered, for kin to claim. I remember odd things about

As they drew near to Liverpool Didon explained that they must still be
